Montana - Lewis and Clark NF
Closed! Kings Hill Cabin Garage Crown Log Project
CCC Building Garage in 1930's in the Middle of Summer
MT-4352
August 14-25, 2017
Must commit to entire session
Join us this summer in the beautiful hills of Montana! The historic Kings Hill Cabin is located on the Helena-Lewis & Clark National Forest, between Great Falls and White Sulphur Springs. It was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and has been fully restored by the US Forest Service for public use in its cabin rental program. However, the associated garage was constructed at the same time as the cabin and, although some restoration (crown log replacement) has been completed, it has suffered the tolls of age and weather. This year, with your help, the US Forest Service regional historic preservation team intends to complete the crown log replacement project. This team is specially trained in historic building rehabilitation and preservation. PIT volunteers will assist FS archaeologists and preservation team members in completing all necessary work. Volunteers will receive proper training in crown log replacement techniques and other historic preservation methods, and all work tools and safety equipment will be provided. The work may sometimes be difficult, definitely sweaty and dirty, but a lot of fun! Additionally, you’ll be helping to restore an historic gem in a beautiful location, and taking with you some terrific skills that can be applied elsewhere – maybe even your next PIT project! See you in August!
