Reroofing at Ninemile Remount Depot

Lolo National Forest, Montana, 1996
This year, the Lolo National Forest Heritage staff, in conjunction with the Arthur Carhart Wilderness Training Center (ACWTC) and the Ninemile Ranger District, completed the fifth PIT project on the forest as PIT volunteers helped replace a wood-shingle roof at the ACWTC office. The buildings occupied by the training center and the ranger district are part of the historic Ninemile Remount Depot, where, from 1933 to 1954, professional packers trained and horses and mules were raised for packstrings that served firefighters all over the northwest.

News broadcasts on local television stations KECI and KPAX highlighted the historical significance of the Ninemile Remount Depot and the volunteers’ interest in and commitment to historic preservation and the PIT program.
