Bobcat Fire of 2020

CA-4485
May 22-26, 2023
Volunteers must commit to entire session

Please join us for another hike through “the fiery hills” of the Angeles National Forest! Since our last adventure back in 2019, the hills have continued to burn, and have revealed new and exciting opportunities for archaeological exploration! This year, we will continue on our archaeological journey as we conduct surveys to locate, photograph, map, and document archaeological sites within recent burn areas (such as the Bobcat Fire location) of the San Gabriel Mountains. Passport in Time volunteers will gain experience in systematic survey methods, map and compass reading, artifact recording, and so much more! The area is known to contain both historic (cabin remains, wagon roads, mining activities) and prehistoric archaeological sites (Native American encampments). The fieldwork will be conducted in an area with no facilities, but it is a fantastic location. Please note that fieldwork will begin Monday morning, May 22nd, but we advise arriving on Sunday, the 21st to set up camp; Forest Service archaeologists will be at the campground to greet you on Sunday afternoon. Join our team as we strike out, once again, to investigate the rich human history of the San Gabriel Mountains, and enjoy the beauty of new life re-emerging from the ashes!

Please note: all volunteers will be required to follow current COVID-19 guidelines, which may include social-distancing, providing proof of qualifying vaccinations, and/or the wearing of masks. Further, due to the ever-evolving nature of the pandemic, this project could be amended, postponed, or canceled. Selected volunteers are encouraged to remain in contact with project leads to stay apprised of any changes.
