Join us this summer on the beautiful ‘Big Valley’ area of the Fremont-Winema NF as we hike through Oregon’s past! Big Valley is a unique and archaeologically rich region on the eastern edge of the Forest. Sites associated with the valley were originally recorded in the 1970s. PIT volunteers and Forest archaeologists will document and update archaeological sites by performing surface survey and up-to-date site recording activities, which will include site measurements, photography, and artifact identification. On alternate days, half the volunteers will travel to different locations on the Forest to record – with drawings and photos – the valley’s historic fire lookouts. So, at the end of day one, volunteers will switch to the Big Valley sites to conduct archaeological site recording; day two, fire lookouts. In short, by the end of the week volunteers will have spent equal time engaged in both site recording and documentation and inspecting architectural soundness and photo documentation. Volunteers will be taught proper field methods, and there is a little something to fit everyone’s interests. We hope to see you in July!

Special skills: Previous archaeological survey, mapping, sketching, photography, interest in fire lookouts/historic structures, and/or artifact identification helpful, but not required
Minimum age: 18 years old
Facilities: Daily transportation will be provided from designated meeting area in Lakeview to the project sites; hotels/motels, camping facilities, and other amenities are available in and around Lakeview at volunteer expense; there will also be opportunities for volunteers to camp in Forest facilities within close proximity of the project areas; amenities will vary, and fees may apply; volunteers responsible for own lodging/personal camping equipment, meals, extra water, and daily transportation to Lakeview meeting area
